Timing Chain/Tensioner Problems

Just got bad news from the dealer on my '08 Mini S. It has 51,000 [just out of warranty, suspiciously enough] and was making a loud clatter upon acceleration. Dealer says it needs a new timing chain/tensioner assembly and estimated repairs at $2500! This seems really high. First off, since when do timing belts go bad at 51,000 miles. The car is driven gently. Will Mini USA help foot the bill since it is just 1,000 miles out of warranty? Input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can't answer that question about warranty help, but if they don't I would suggest taking it to an independent shop that specializes in Minis. I'm sure the cost will be a lot less.

Good luck!!

Talk to them in a professional manner. Many times they have enough latitude to do a "goodwill" or at least help out.

They did help with mine at 54K miles but I had complained about the noise for a long time & they always said it was normal. Ask about the vacuum pump too. It went out at 64K miles and they aren't helping with that because they said I let it run low on oil. Wasn't time to be changed yet and go no oil pressure warning.New motor 6,000.
