Shift Linkage Cable Gone Bad?

On my way home tonight I was almost home, downshifted into second, and felt something pop loose with the gear shift. From there on out, I was stuck in second and unable to shift to any other gear (gear shift became 'floppy'). Could the have been the shift cable linkage cable? I read there was a recall, and I don't know if this was ever done (I am the 2nd owner). Anyone know what I am looking at cost-wise if this is the problem?

Took out the airbox this morning to find the white collar that holds the cable in place snapped.

Just had it towed to BMW (closest Mini dealership is 1.5 hours away). Not looking forward to this bill.
