P0136 & p0456

I have for the past 2 months been getting these 2 codes (p0136 p0456) when my SES light comes on. I replaced my gas cap and the codes went away. The rubber ring on the inside of my old cap was cracked and obviously worn.

Just thought I would post this so anyone else getting these codes will have somewhere to start.

You can also go to any checker auto parts or "Oreily's" and use their code reader for free. I do it all the time, you just walk in, give them your license and they hand it over, and they do work on our MINI's

quick update. after a couple tanks of gas the SES light came back on. this time it was only P0136. Anybody have recomendations as to what could be the culprit?

I am not going to replace the o2 sensor unless I know it isnt something else. I did that on a previous car that had the same code and it didnt remedy the problem. also the light has been going off and on frequently. I thought at first it was only coming on when I was driving hard but the last time I was very careful not to drive it hard and it still came back on.

Should I try replacing the plugs & wires? the motor only has 55k on it.

I might get flamed for this, but you can always swap the two O2 sensors. The pre-cat unit will have a much higher carbon buildup vs the post-cat one. The engine relies more heavily on the pre-cat unit.

No problem. Hope that works.

If you do find you need to replace the O2 sensors, please don't buy the Bosch units. They don't meet OEM specs. You'll end up spending money for nothing. The replacement is an NTK 25648. You can read more here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...r-install.html. In my last post in that thread, Summit had them for $130 each.

Swapping them will work just fine. The rear one is there to measure the health of the cat, and doesn't affect the engine management system in the way that the front one does. And yes, both the Bosch universal and the Bosch "OEM match" will trigger the SES light. Why Bosch continues to list these as compatible, I'll never know. $$ probably. It drives a lot of bad decisions.
