Mini Cooper Convertible top issue -in San Antonio

I had this posted in the Newbie area (as I am new to this web site)--and did not get any response--so am hoping that I can get help in this forum. I saw where another person had responded to another person's issue and advised her to do this---so here goes!

I have a 2005 convertible. Last week, as I was closing the top, the right passenger side made this horrible crunching noise as it was latching into place. I took it to my mechanic who has always been very fair. He gave me a price of over $4600 to replace the entire frame assembly----as it 'might' happen to the other side, as it is a cheap plastic part. Cheap!

I had also called BMW here in San Antonio, they quoted me $3200. Better but,---wow.

BMW replaced the top January, 2009. Of course, no longer in warranty.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to proceed? Is this a DIY, Does anyone know of a good and reasonable and fair mechanic here in San Antonio?

I recently had a similar issue where one side didn't close all the way. The part was $1800; one of the mini techs provided the labor at his house over the weekend and it was $500, for a total of $2300. Unfortunately, the top repairs are rather expensive.

I had a little crunch last week too and a small plastic chunk fell into my lap. I kept it. My top closes, but I can hear a little wind noise from that side.

Sigh.
