Further evidence that we are getting screwed by BMW regarding this obvious defect in our cars. BMW should have stepped up and done this in the United States years ago. The power steering pumps in Canadian cars are no different than in the U.S. So it sounds like in Canada the government applied pressure...why isn't NHTSA doing the same here? Just look at the NHTSA database. How many more reports does NHTSA need to see before they force the issue?

Also trying to figure this out. I don't think that the S pumps are any different than the Justas. I emailed the service manager at BMW Gallery here in Calgary. We'll see!

The 2006 MINI's have a special duct that directs air to the PS pump while keeping most of the grit out. I know mine has it, because I had to take it off once. It's a long sucker too, goes all the way to the front.

I heard it only came on the ones with an automatic or convertible

Mine is a 2005 Cooper Convertible. When I called my dealer here in Canada and gave them my VIN # they said my car is NOT on the recall list. So it seems like there are exceptions, or that it takes a while for the information to trickle down from BMW Canada to the dealers...
Funny thing is my stupid power steering fan has DIED. they really should have covered the cost of the repair since it's such a pi$$ poor design!

Has anyone tried contacting Transport Canada directly to see if the recall affects S models as well?
Glad to see that the recall is out, but they took their damn time getting out. I replaced my PS pump and fan last spring because the pump was noisy but still working well. Could have saved myself some $ if this had come out sooner.

Oh and supposedly if you got it fixed at the dealership and your car is on the recall list you'll get your money back.

OK, in the US NHTSA has known what the Canadian government did for at least 2 1/2 months now, and still no recall on this urgent safety issue! Guess we have to wait until someone gets injured or killed beause they can't steer their car? Outrageous!BMW is not going to extend the recall to the US until NHTSA forces them to, as Transport Canada did. BMW has known of this issue for years, but has never addressed it...other than redesigning the pump, and then forcing the customer to pay for a redesigned pump after the incorrectly designed ones fail. Just look at the NHTSA site how many people have reported this issue, but still no recall. It's really disgraceful, both on BMW's part and well as NHTSA's.

Big companies are just like politicians or government in power. They almost never admit they're wrong.

I agree, look how many drivers were killed with the Ford Pinto and the Ford Exployer with the tires before a recall was issued.
Mazda issued a recall for their steering pump problems a year later
The recall comes about a year after Mazda started fixing vehicles in Japan for the same problem. But Mazda told the American safety agency that since the “occurrence rate was low” in the United States it issued only a technical service bulletin to dealers telling them how to fix the problem.

Received my recall letter yesterday.
I drive a 2002 MCS, march build.
A lot of good the recall is to me now. I had the pump replaced last spring.
I wasn't gone yet but was whining like a banshee.
At least I bought the pump from a parts supplier and had installed at performance shop rather than at the stealership.
