Good, I'm glad I can't get the oil filter back on
WTF does my car need oil for anyway. Maybe I'll fill it up with oil and floor it down the street so I can pretend I'm in Spy Hunter and make an oil slick behind me before my engine explodes, hopefully killing me with it. Seems like a proper fate after not being able to get my oil housing canister back on without cross-threading it for the last hour.

check the threads on the canister and on the block. may have a damaged leading thread that you can try to clean up. if you use a wrench to put the housing back on you may not detect that it is cross-threaded and can damage them even further. you can pick up replacements from here and on ebay if need be. someone here may be able to chime in and help you more. fortunately I haven't had this issue.

Clean the threads up on the canister.
Apply a little clean oil to the O-ring around the canister.
Use your hand to push down on the oil filter in the canister and make sure it is all the way down.
Hand thread the canister to start. it should start on easy but then tighten when the O-ring starts making contact.
Put a wrench on the canister and tighten slowly. It should be fairly easy to turn at first but then tightens quickly.
Torque the canister to the correct tension and you are done.
It isn't that hard really. I think your problem may be either the filter was not pre-fit in the canister or the O-ring was not oiled. Both can make ti difficult to start threading properly.

i was in the same boat brother! Don't fret though .. read this!

I was close to doing CPR to the filter trying to push and push it down into the filter. I'm not a complete idiot and followed all the directions to a T - that filter kicked my nuts for almost an hour.
Patience!

Glad to hear the OP solved his problem, but for anybody else I strongly recommend pushing the oil filter all the way onto the canister housing before trying to thread the canister back on to the car. I have a bunch of Mahle filters and you definitely need to do that for those. They do fit on with kind of a pop or thump. Unless you hear that it's not on properly. Once it is properly seated it is much easier almost all they way to easy to thread the canister on.
Also make sure you have all of the canister pieces- there's a spring or something like that that has been known to stick in to the old filter.
One more tip- I have found that it's easiest to unscrew the canister from the top but easiest to thread it back up from under the car.
Take a deep breath and relax. We're all here to help.

Good to hear you got it on....
I find if i put the oil filter on first...then put the canister on...turn it backwards a tiny bit till you feel it pass the threads...then forwards to tighten...
I often find taking an hour off when i get stuck is a good way to solve an issue...return, and somhow it just works!!
