Great news! My windshield is badly pitted from So. Cal. freeway traffic. This glass is soft! A higher tempered glass should fix it.

Just spoke to my service manager has no idea about new glass.

I wrote down all the info and am going to present it to him.

Could you email the contact info so I can give him that as well.

Thanks,

Just picked up my 2004 IB MC last week. It has these numbers (notations) on the corner of the windshield. Wonder how long MINI has been installing the new windsield on the new models?

Gee! Hope they upgraded my 5 speed tranny seals at the same time!

>>>>>>When I had the first windscreen replaced at the dealer (by their outside contractor) the total charge was close to $900. Thank Buddha for a $100 deductable. The second windscreen was replaced by the outside contractor (Ryans, if anyone's in Pitt.)in their shop but the insurance was, again, charged almost $900.

>>>>>>And PPG = PITTSBURGH Plate Glass  Thankfully it passed the ballpoint pen test and the dealer is doing the warantee work!!
I just had a crack start at the bottom edge and grow up about 2 inches before turning right another two inches. I am having Novus look at it to see if it can be stopped. It is not in a bad spot. I did hear something hit the windshield a couple of days before it cracked.
What is the ball point test? I may try it and call my dealer.
Thanks in advance!

I have read that they run a ball point pen inside the crack to see if there is a pit that might have caused the crack. Dang these windshields!!...I got a penny size chip in my windshield. I haven't check with the dealer yet to see if the warrrenty covers it. But from what I have read they will not. So I'm hope they will recall all the old windshields because they are to soft and get damaged really easy.

I just checked the windshield factory markings on my '04 MCS (9/2003 build) and they do correspond to the old thinner glass. However, I haven't had any problems with it.

Today I am driving a LOADED 2004 Cooper CVT loaner with 50 miles on it (12/2003 build date) and the windshield markings match those found on the new and improved thicker windshield glass.

So I am assuming that cars build since December 2003 already come with the new glass from factory.

I haven't got a cracked windshield on my 03 build but have a few annoying little pits that light up like crazy when heading into the sun. Anyone have a solution to this without replacing the glass?

Thanks,
Sid

I need to replace my windshield--'03 MCS w rain sensor. I'd like to contact Phil Kahler re this. I spoke with 2 dealers and they didn't seem too up on current new events. Also 1 dealer told me the existing part cost about $340 and installation would bring the total to about $900. Is that correct? Please help and thanks. Lowell Dickson, Irvine , Ca. lowelld1@***.net

Lowell,

My '03 MCS recieved a stone chip while being delivered to me last June (I bought from a private party). At the time Irvine MINI quoted me around $700 to replace the windshield, and it was higher than the regular glass because of the rain sensor. So your $900 quote doesn't seem too surprising.

It's a small chip - though almost directly in front of me - and I'm just living with it right now.

You might try calling around to some independant glass shops to quotes. Some have posted here with satisfaction with PPG replacement glass.

I Hope that helps.

Bump.....Is it true that different dealers will quote different prices? Called three different dealers. (1) Quoted me about 150 for the windshield and about 600 for labor (2) another wouldn't give me a price unless I gave a VIN (3) Last one quoted me at about 85 for the windshield and about 146 for labor.
Now out of all of these, which one seems most realistic? Want to get a replacement but having trouble deciding where to go...I mean obviously cheaper would be better, but is that last quote too good to be true???
