>>The Mini Cooper 5-speed uses 2.1 quarts and the Mini Cooper S is 1.8 quarts. That's found on page 135 of the 2004 manual. The 6-speed is definately synthetic. I used Redline MT-90 which is a synthetic 90w gear oil on recommendations on MINI2.
>thanks for the info, don't know why i couldn't find that in the manuel , the part i like best is next to the transmission info where it says contact your mini dealer for more details,, but when you call them it's like asking a politician a question,, what type of oil is used in the transmission,, reply , how many miles is on your car, reply does that make a difference as to what type of oil the transmission needs, reply, no but your car is under warrranty>,,, so after a few minutes of this you finaly just give up and go to NAM where the real answers are,, cheers

>>Texaco MTF94 is what MINI says it takes. It's a lifetime oil. Never needs to be changed.
Of course "Life Time Oil" is defined as the oil in the gearbox during theuseful life of.............the GEARBOX!!! HOWEVER long or short that may be......as consumers we (all of us humans) tend to be lazy and neglect maintenance. It is easy to not change gear oil....after all we seldom keep cars past four years or we lease them so what do we care. If you plan to keep your baby, treat it right and change your gear oil often (once a year would be cool, every two acceptable). Any reputable leading brand, preferably synthetic will do. GM, Ford have AWESOME sythetic gear oils, the best there is.....of course they do not make it themselves...but telling who would not be nice..... and no they ain't cheap....what did you pay for your last cup of cafe au lait at Starsucks??

So is all synthetic gear lube basically the same? or is MTF94 something special?

I've got some Mobile 1 synthetic 75/90, but not sure if this is going to do the trick.
Any advice?

Follow the euro link below for info about recommended gear oil for the MC. Redline's MTL (manual transmission fluid; get on Redline's web site for detailed info) has the same weight as recommended (70w-80). Redline's 90w trans oil is a bit heavier; might be OK for hot weather and racing.
I replaced the trans oil in my '04 MC at 1,500 miles using Redline's MTL. MTL is synthetic, as is the factory gear oil. The factory oil was ugly looking after even just 1,500 miles. Of course, any time I've changed the gear oil in any vehicle I've ever owned over the last 35 years the old fluid has looked ugly! "Lifetime" gear oil? Give me a freaking break!
The gear oil is easy to change. Jack up the left front, take off wheel, locate the fill and drain plugs (shiny goldish color, 17mm as I recall - and the plugs were in way too tight), replace drain plug (I always use good old permatex 2 as a thread sealer), fill using a small funnel (2 quarts fills it perfect), and enjoy motoring with a freshly lubricated tranny...er, or something like that
