rough idle and P1497 code!!

Hi,

My 08 clubman S threw a code this morning. It was P1497 from auto shop code reader. And I have rough idle from time to time. After I searched forum, I think I have cracked cylinder head cover problem. I hear vacuum leak around pcv valve location. But I can not believe this plastic cover just broke down. Everything is consumable part in this mini.

It's becoming more prevalent due to the possible internal PCV valve being blocked / clogged in the valve cover.
The pressures overload the seals and integrity of the cover and create leaks.

Valve covers are cheap and easy to replace.

Hi,

Valve cover has been changed today.
I attached the cracked pcv image. I see lots of oil dust around top. Hissing /vacuum leak sound is gone now.

I recently purchased an R56 and after cleaning the MAF and clearing other codes I have this code and the leaking sound from the same area. Thanks for the info provided!

I have the same code, hissing in the same area. Any way to check if it is the valve cover or perhaps another part? Or is that the main culprit?

hahaha. You haven't priced one out for these things have you? It's not JUST a valve cover. It's a $300 PCV system integrated valve cover.

My friends 08 MCS is making the exact same hissing sound from the back left corner. Is the fix to replace the valve cover? What is under the upper cover of the valve cover? Does that part come off?

Sure I have; I've replaced one myself on a clients vehicle.
If you fretting over a part that's only some 1%-2% of the total vehicle cost, you're owning the wrong vehicle.

The hissing can either be the PCV (which is that black cover looking portion of the valve cover, which does not come off), or the PCV hose which runs from the intake to the PCV. You need to diagnose which of the two it is, but chances are it is the PCV, in which case, yes the fix is buy a new valve cover.
