Tachometer computer LCD not lighting

The computer LCD display on the tachometer on my 2004 Mini Cooper S goes out and then comes back on randomly. Most often it is off. The tach continues to work with no problem. When the LCD is not lit up, you can tell it's working because you can faintly see the display (temperature, miles until empty, etc.)....and when I say you can still see the display I mean very...very faintly (have to look at very close).

I was hoping for a loose connection, removed the tach and reconnected the wiring harness but it didn't to anything to help.

Not sure if the circuit board is bad or what. I imagine wouldn't be a bulb since the display is LCD.

Anyone run into this or have suggestions? Checked pricing to replace the tachometer today (complete unit) was $305 for the part.

You can try removing the tach and wiggle the wiring connecting to the tach and see if you have a bad connecting at the wiring.

If your connection is good, and if you're pretty decent at soldering, you can open up the tach and check out the solder joints on those specific LEDs in question and reflow them. That should do the trick unless the LEDs are bad, but LEDs generally either work or don't, never flickers.
