Fuel Pump failure at 4 1/2 years and 36K miles?

My 2008 R52 with just over 36,000 miles was just diagnosed with a failed fuel pump. Estimate from MINI dealer is $1018. Is it common for a fuel pump to fail so early? How can I be reasonably certain that they've properly diagnosed the problem and I won't be paying a grand for something that could have been fixed with a 50 cent fuse?

Should I ask them to replace the fuel filter too while they are in there?

Should I ask for the old fuel pump back to make sure they've done it?

Is this a told-you-so from my MINI that I should have picked up that extended warranty?

Were my driving/fueling habits somehow to blame?

By the way, I love the Pelican Parts repair pages. If I had time and a little more mechanical experience, I might have given it a do-it-yourself try.

Best not to dive right into full gasoline tanks I suppose.

Do you ever drive your Mini with the gas tank level low-like below a quarter of a tank? Also, I would find an independent repair shop to reduce the cost of the repair.

We replied to your other post (thanks for the kind words), but yes, as Pbadore suggested, it'd be better to find an independent mechanic in your area specializing in MINIs. I personally consider the dealership a last resort.

Apparently, bad batches of gas exist. Rarely, but it happens.

Even rarer I'm certain is the retailer who takes the initiative to send a letter to me informing me of reports of fuel system issues in vehicles that bought their premium gas at the location where I did.

Long story short, they reimbursed me in full for the fuel pump repair.

And although MINI of SA were very good, the next repair will be at a non-dealer shop (or DIY if I can handle it).
