Crank pulley removal problem!

So, i think i've made a terrible mistake. While getting ready to remove the OEM damper, I snapped one of the 3 puller bolts off inside the OEM damper. Lets not talk about how....the hardware was used and in awful condition, but mostly I absent-mindedly went a little too far.

Anyway. There's maybe 1/8th of an inch hanging out, and if i can find some vice grips I might be able to get it out. But in the meantime, is there anything else I can do? I just need to get this damn OEM pulley off! I don't think 2 out of 3 bolts would get it off...would it? I'm afraid I'd just break the other 2 bolts.

Oh and I do have 1 back up bolt to use to replace the broken one...as long as I can get it out.

Halp!

Vice grips will likely be your friend. Use spray such as wd40 or similar to help aid in the removal of the pulley.

Did the balancer budge at all before the bolt snapped?

If you do get the broken bolt out I would head to the hardware store and buy replacement bolts for all 3 on the removal tool.

I just experienced the same thing. The bolts provided with the puller are only slightly better than garbage. After I broke mine, I picked up some grade 12.9 socket head cap screws to replace them. Those worked like a charm.

I was able to remove the broken off bolt with vice grips and a little luck.

Got it out with a set of vice grips. Phew!

Trip to hardware store tomorrow.

This install would have taken about 45 minutes if I started over from scratch....grrr. Oh well. Lesson learned.

Glad you were able to get that broken bolt out. Another option for anyone else reading this thread with the same problem would be to cut a slot into the protruding piece with a Dremel or small hacksaw blade and use a flathead screwdriver to back it out.
