Sounds like the price is about right for the oem....
But generally it is worth it...can find it a bit cheaper...
The non-oem units, new or rebuilt seem to have a short life...they simply do not last, even when they come with a "lifetime" warrenty....
you need to spend hours or $$ to pay to have them swapped out on a semi regular basis.
if you are going to diy it, there are a few guides, and a couple different methods to do it....all kinda involved, but not incredibly hard, but might not be a good FIRST mini diy, unless you have a warm garage, some tools, and maybe a buddy to help out.
It is kinda like the old FRAM oil filter add from years ago, with the old mechanic saying "You can pay me a little extra now, or more later...".
So pick your poison based upon the relibility you want from your mini, and the amount of inconvience future tows and breakdowns will cause....

A "3rd party" remanfactured unit may not be the way to go, but if it is a rebuild done with quality parts, like the oem, then it might be worth it....especially if it has been rebuilt by the oem maker of the part....
there have been many threads of folks going with bigbox/internet rebuildd for low $$, only to have them repeatedly fail. If the above poster has had good luck with a good rebuilder (even most of the deler sold units are often remanfsctured), then it might be worth it...heck might be the same unit mini/bmw is selling if rebuilt with oem.parts....and by the oem by the sound of it!! I would not expect a huge $$ savings vs oem, but if you want to give it a try to save $200 or so, might be worth it to some.
I would just stay away from the $150-200 lifetime ones that float around...the makers/rebuilders that sell parts to this market knows the car will be junked or sold in most cases in 2 years....and the price/quality if the parts reflect it.

Denso is a quality rebuilder. We sell Bosch, Remy, USA, Hitachi, and Denso. I can tell you that Denso has the lowest defect rates of all remanufacturers. The rebuilding is done at a Denso facilty in California. I once had an 88 VW Scirocco and the starter went out. I was out of town and went to one of the big box auto chains that offer a lifetime warranty on their brand (I assure it was not Denso). Needless to say I spent a lifetime changing that turd. Go with Denso reman unit. You will not be disappointed.

WWW.DENSOPRODUCTS.COM is a distributor of Denso products but is not affiliated with the parent company. They are very fine folks and you did great. World Pac is a nationwide distributor of parts that was formerly owned by Carquest. World Pac only sells to intallers and dealers. This should be the last alternator that you will have to put on your car. Let us know the results!!
