Boot won't open. Tried cleaning connections. What's next?

My boot won't open. It releases fine with the cable under the back seat. I removed the handle and sprayed all the connections with contact cleaner. It still isn't working.

Is there anything else to try before I replace the whole handle?

If I do end up having to replace it, where's the cheapest place to buy one?

Thanks

If you have a volt meter, check to see if you have power to the switch.

No volt meter, check all the fuses as it does need power to open.

It may share a fuse with something else but I'm not home to check the Bently Book.

Why do you suspect the handle? It only contains an electric switch. Do you hear the solenoid latch lock/unlock when you operate the lock toggle or remote key?

I suspected a fuse but the rear wiper and the license plate lights work. I assumed they would be on the same fuse but maybe not.

The only thing I hear when I toggle the lock switch or key is the the doors unlock. Nothing near the boot. I suspect the handle because in searching around the forums the only issues I ran into were people with corroded handle switches. I took mine off and there was some corrosion on that metal clip. What else should I check?

Mine gets a little bit of water in it every now and then, that's when it stops working. It'll work again when everything is dry . Maybe check if you have all of your lenses for your license plate lights?

I'm missing a license plate bulb lens but it's been several days and I took it apart last night and nothing seemed wet anymore so I don't know if its coming back from the dead.

Miners missing too, depending on how wet it gets in there, it can take a couple of days before it completely dries out. Maybe you can put it *** first in the sun?

It sits in what little sun we have. Haha. Stupid inversion.

I have a 05 MCS and as far as I can tell the fuse is the same as the interior dome light and footwell lights not the same for the trunk light and the puddle light those are on another fuse. Did you loose your interior lights? If you did it could be the fuse

No, Interior lights still work. As far as I can tell I haven't lost anything other than the boot opening.

Wow if the lights still work then is not the fuse, did you test the fuse at all? I had the same problem but the first time was due to water in the connector and it would open by itself I the open the boot handle and put a blow dryer to dry the connectors and that worked until I washed the car, after that my interior lights and boot fuse kept blowing, I replaced about 10 fuses before it started to work as if nothing was going on. I'm going to tackle the boot handle and try to water proof it before it does it again.I hope that you don't have to change anything and can solve it, it is very annoying when you have to open it from inside.

It could be the door handle, they tend to get water past the gasket, if you can get it working replacing the gasket is a must and the lens , two of them on the bottom of this post.

Handle in chrome, we have them in primed version also.

The lens pop out over time due to age and then water gets in there and corrodes.

Good luck, trouble shooting electrical can take some time.

So the boot opened yesterday but then stopped again this morning. No rain or snow last night either. Frustrating. Must be the switch in the handle.

Mine won't open if its been raining. I took it inside my garage, used a hairdryer to dry out everything, and it opened. When I shut it again, it unlocked, locked and unlocked itself many times. It went crazy! The next day it was all good though.

Lol this is just too funny, they way this cars behave is is frustrating I took mine to the car wash last night with my fingers crossed and thank God nothing happened, everything is working. Next thing to do is to buy the gasket from ECS I went to Manhattan MINI this morning and is 20.00 but they don't have it in stock, I also need one of the horns and that it 70.00 !!!!!!! Crazy!!!! I'll be ordering from ECS and save a bit of money.
Also I think that they have the hole handle that includes the switch and the lenses for about 80.00 or so, good luck I hope it helps

Handle for the fix.

I had that same problem a few years ago while still under warranty. The SA asked if I went to automatic car washes or spray off for many quarters kind. Said they were seeing a lot of the switches in the handles go bad. Don't aim the high pressure hose up in there.

Yes the handles come with the lens , two of them , the internal switch and the gasket on the back.

This is the chrome one.

You can see more shots of the product to solve your issues.

If you need the primed version ( for painted handles ) or just plain flat black we have those also.

I would upgrade the lighting and pop out the old bulbs and go with LEDs while your at it. Great upgrade while your have the handle out.

ECS...

I haven't try the LED's yet are you 100% sure that this bulbs won't flicker at the beginning ? I put off this mod just because of that, I would like to order a couple of those LEDs but I don't like returning stuff if it doesn't work
Thanks

No flicker, they contain the built in resistors.
Currently have them running on our MINIs and they look great. One of the best outside lighting upgrades.

Thanks

I don't think that you can, as far as I know the handle comes with the lights and the Micro switch but I could be wrong

Give this part a try at the dealer maybe they have it. Part number 51477114536 MICRO SWITCH, TRUNK LID KEY BUTTON 0.01 1 $47.64

or this http://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2005-C...h/51477114536/

Im not 100% sure if this is the part
good luck

You can get the little micro switch but you have to take apart the handle to install it and its a little intensive to install without breaking other things. Then hoping that nothing else is corroded because it installs on a little board. Also if you are leaking from the lower rubber seal ( part of the grip ) its part of the main handle and not available on its own

Let me know if you guys need anything else.

Do you hear anything when you press the handle button? If you hear nothing, it is probably the switch or wiring in the handle. If you hear the latch mechanism trying to unlock, the handle is working and the problem is the latch.

Quick Reply: Boot won't open. Tried cleaning connections. What's next?
