MCS 2005 CVT Rebuild
Just wanted to praise 5th Gear in Broomfield, Co for an efficient, courteous and effective diagnosis and rebuild of our 2005 MCS CVT. Symptom of failure at 94K miles was violent hard shift and, as the transmission warmed up, no gear shift control. The CVT valve body assembly was replaced and the transmission is working well. The folks at 5th Gear car also replaced the EC power steering two years earlier which works like original. We're proud of this little car and happy there is a Mini shop like 5th Gear we can rely on.

The ASIN (of Japan) tranny used in the 2005+ gen1 S is very common in VW's, toyotas and a few Audi's....very minor changes to each model.
The valve body changes are actually done as a warranty item on the VW with the same tranny....
The CVT is an entirely different beast...no Gears, NO valve body....but an electronic controller and 2 piullies shaped like a cone, and belt....submerged in oil....
The importance of the differentiation is that BASICALLY NOBODY has relibibily found a way to FIX the CVT's....
They get lucky on one....then have another one that does not work...
Most ANY transmission shop can WORK on a S tranny!!
Still Good you got it fix!! Shop suggestions are ALWAYS good!!Don't get me wrong, but it is not a $7500 issue like with a CVT! I just don't want a CVT owner to have a CVT towed in to have the shop turn them away...

2005 / One, Cooper, Cooper S
The 2005 model year MINI Coupes introduced a number of new features and advancements that addressed issues with both design and engineering of the original car. Hundreds of components were upgraded and several key drivetrain improvements were made............
Another area that problems persisted were with the One and Cooper models with the optional CVT transmission. While issues seem to be less frequent than the earlier cars, the basic design of the transmission didn’t change in ’05 and thus it would be wise to keep this in mind when shopping. Of course the newly released automatic on the Cooper S was a traditional torque converter style auto that doesn’t share any of the CVT issues. That said modern automatic transmissions aren’t always known for their long-term (100k+) reliability so keep that in mind.

it is a conventional automatic transmission with a valve body (tf60sn by aisin) NOT a CVT. perhaps they changed your supercharger belt and pulley/idler while they were fixing your tranny. there are no MCS's with cvts.
