How much is a key chip?

My car wouldn't crank this morning, 3 attempts, removed the key a few times, messed with it, and it started. I know for sure its the key chip, probably going bad. Every now and then I start the car, and it shuts off, probably the same reason. It starts up right away when that happens, but probably soon time for a new chip. Just wondering how much its going to be? Or could I bypass the chip somehow?

Your symptoms have nothing to do with the key. If there was anything wrong with the immobilizer chip, the engine would stay completely dead and you'd never be able to start the car or crank the engine. You have a mechanical or electrical problem in the car. I would guess possibly your ignition switch. Also check the condition of your car battery.

The battery in the key is only for the remote lock/unlock transmitter.

I bought a new battery, and she starts every time without hesitation now. I thought it was for the lock, and unlock transmitter only also.

Same thing happend to mine. Its weired that the battery and chip also keeps someone from stealing your key and making a copy. You have to have the chip and battery in it to start.

Glad you got the new battery and it works now for ya!
Yea, I was thinking about replacing the battery in the key, but just thought that was for the locking, and unlocking which still worked. I was going to get a new battery, but kept forgetting.

Well, that's something I can't explain. Non-remote keys are available (with immobilizer chip, but no battery or transmitter) and they will start and operate the car. The immobilizer chip is RFID and isn't powered by a battery.
