Engine needs replacement after only 3.5 years; excellent condition to toast in a day

This is exactly why I paid the bucks to have MINI install a temp gauge in my 2013 JCW Hardtop when it was new in March. Even the gauge is under warranty. Every MINI should have one. This orange light, red light business, is just BS. You need to know when it's going wrong, not after it's gone wrong!

JCW gauges, mine came with H20 temp and relative torque. Mind you the 1st half of the temp gauge goes from 0-90 C and the 2nd half goes from 90-120, redlining at 115. The models before 2013 operate between 105-110 so the gauge itself is almost useless. With the A/C on high fan speed or running the engine hard it runs from 90-95 C.
The torque gauge is even moreso just for show, but it's fun watching it go past 100% when in over boost.
Plus they are insanely expensive if you have them factory/dealer installed, so I wouldn't opt for them. $500 installed, I believe. Basically the temp gauge would give you 5C of 'warning' before stuff starts breaching.

Yes, here they are on my 2013 JCW hardtop. Yes, they are costly, but wouldn't be without the temp gauge. The torque gauge is fun if you have a manual trans. I have 20% hills, 40% hills 60% hills, ect. My temp runs around 90 deg C (194 deg F) most of the time with outside air temp 80 to 90 deg F. depending upon terrain and speed. That is without the front license plate blocking part of the radiator.

Do you run on sport mode all the time or does the engine run at 90-95 even in non-sport on the JCWs?

Temp gauge
When I ran my LM on dirt in the 70's my temp was on the right, and oil pressure on the left, so it's just a carry over from that I suppose!

Temp gauge
Use it!! When you're 74 years young, and been through what I've been through, your last worry is about making your kids rich. They think I'm cool with my 6 speed JCW Hardtop stick shift cruising with a Jerry Lee Lewis C/D in the player!

I'm "only" 52 and still have a teenager at home but I will still use your line. And yes, the JCW Hardtop I have on order is a stick too. Only way to go, even if I end up needing bilateral knee replacements ~

My oldest will be 52 soon. She is a diesel driver and loves sticks too! I bought a 2012 Clubman S used last fall to see if I wanted to drive a stick again. As soon as I drove it I knew the answer----go order a JCW Hardtop. Traded in the Clubman and got my JCW in March. Best shifting stick and smoothest clutch I've ever driven. Way better than the Clubman! Getting off topic here, but fun stuff anyway!

You rock! Thanks for the info on water temp, interesting what they did for 2013.

Good to hear, can't wait to get my hands (and feet) on my JCW !

Here's a tip for you shifters. Get the nm short shifter kit installed. At least 20% shorter throws. Huge difference. Only paid $65 to have mine installed (labor). That's the ONLY mod I have done to my '13 JCW HT. Unless you count window tint and stubby antenna

I am still wondering about the original post. How much would cost to rebuild the engine? Would be that too expensive that could not be placed on a credit card? Would that give the OP the opportunity to build more equity and not be upside down on his loan? And again, does the oil and/or coolant disappears overnight without leaving a trace? My take is that someone drained the coolant at the dealership and forgot to replace it.

I only drove manuals from 1976 (age 15) thru 1994. Then I got away from them until I bought this R50 last year. I don't think much about the throw because it seems normal to me compared to all the other sticks I've driven. But man... shorter throw just has to mean more fun ! Especially in a JCW.
