Clunk when applying gas

Hey everyone,

I did a search for this and found problems and solutions that were CLOSE to the issue I'm having, but not quite the same.

Whenever I go to apply gas, especially between 2-3k RPM, and I press the pedal down quickly, there is a distinct and fairly jarring clunk. My current feeling is it's the engine mounts, but I can't see and residue or oil underneath the mounts, which is usually what indicates that they are going.

My question is the following: Has anyone else had this problem with the jerking when applying throttle quickly? If so, what was done to fix it?

I'm also skeptical that the issue is the mounts, I had a very reputable shop (although they specialize in BMW's, not necessarily Mini's) look at the car and perform a "Used car look over" and they pointed out things like my passenger side Tie Rod needs replacing etc etc but I feel like failing engine mounts would be one of the first things that they would check, am I wrong about that?

How many different engine/transmission mounts are there in the R53 MCS? I'm not terribly familiar with Mini's, as this is my first one and I just bought it two weeks ago.

Thanks in advance ladies and gents!

-Tom

This is the upper engine mount. 2004 so there is split year.

Posted this in another thread and helped with the diagram. Also check for the mount is leaking oil, that denotes its bad, sometimes only seen in the back.

Here is the diagram for the older one. #4 in diagram. Check there.

#11 and 7 is the lower engine mount, You might want to check that also if its separated from the rubber on the larger section.

On the transmission side there is #1 mount which there is a part number for the automatic and manual transmission version for the Cooper S.

Let me know what year you have for the tie rod , those can also produce a clunk which can be felt in the steering when turning over bumps. You can feel it in the MINI easier then BMWs because the steering is so connected to the wheel. Check the mounts first then go to the tie rods.

Thanks
