09 R56 MCS Grinding while steering

Having a bit of trouble figuring this one out so wanted to get some other opinions. 09 MCS with 92k.

Lately, on occasion, i've noticed a grinding noise while at low speeds and turning, such as into a parking space. Its not all the time. But yesterday after driving for about 40 mins I was turning around in a parking lot and heard it again, rather loud. I stopped and was able to replicated it turning left and right while stopped. Loud enough to be very concerning. Initially I was thinking steering rack but now considering it might be strut mounts. However the noise isn't consistent. I parked it for a few hours and when I got back in it was normal and this morning its been fine.

Haven't had a chance to put it on ramps and crawl under or take wheels off yet. Just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

tires scratching the walls/wells probably. I get an occasional periodical scratching/knocking after switching to wide (I think 17/45/205?) winter tires and turning.

Its possible but unlikely. I know i've boogerd up some wheel well fasteners doing various things. However I have stock size 195s on 16s.

I've heard weird noises from the tires scrubbing on pavement before. (At a stop or while moving.) Any chance it could be that?

At your mileage I'd be looking at the strut top mounts & the lower control arm bushings. Not sure if that is it, but I think it's a good place to start.

Check to make sure there isn't play in the wheel bearing too.

Grinding noise only when steering left to right? or you hear it while only at full right and hold or full left and hold? If so, bad power steering pump? It kind of makes a grinding sound.

Top strut mount is what I'm leaning towards. I do drive on some crappy roads for a few miles everyday and sometimes hit some bad holes. Its a grinding as you turn the wheel so thats why I think that top bearing vs the CA bushing. But will still look.

I'll check that out as well. I had suspected a wheel bearing for a "whiring" noise but a tire change canceled it out.

It wasn't only at full lock. I don't even think I took it to full lock since it sounded so bad. Just tried to baby it as much as possible.

------

The only other thing I can think of was that it was a warmer than normal day Sunday so it might be part of the reason I haven't been able to replicate it yet.

I'll have it up in the air soon to replace my turbo feed line so will have a better chance to look around.

Did you ever find the issue? I am having the exact same issue with my 07 sport.
