Looks like things internally arent too bad. If I were you, I would do an overbore on the cylinders along with new pistons and rings, the resulting increase in displacement and compression ratio, even though slight, should increase your performance some. I'd also have the head checked for flatness/warpage and pressure tested to check for cracks just in case. Being that the head was hot from the fire and then doused with water, there may or may not be problems. Any competent machine shop can do the tests and necessary corrections. From the pictures it looks like the rest of the engine and engine compartment looks pretty clean.
Keep up the good work!

Crispy MINI
What a great project! I hope you're having a great time with it. Building/restoring/creating from scratch is a great thing to do. When you're done with this project, your car will belong to you in a way that just writing a check for it will never match.
Please continue to keep us posted on your progress.

Keepin it real :-) Quite and undertaking, and a Mini isn't exactly a simple car to work on either... Is the ECU ok???
While your are it, I'd seriously consider (if you are) installing the mods now. While everything is apart, it will make it much easier. Headers, intake, polished heads, etc... All will be a snap at the moment :-)
anyways, keep us updated and *respect*

Really cool project! This is very interesting. Out of curiousity how much did you pay for the Mini on ebay?

Heads Up
I was at Classic MINI, Mentor, Ohio yesterday. They are in the process of junking a complete motor that some retard drove into deep water and made it take a couple of gulps. all sort of nice goodies on it (Valve cover comes to mind) you might be able to get cheap. Call Classic BMW Parts......I am guessing it will go to the junkyard next week.
