Water Temp Over 250

Morning all.

this weekend it has been pretty cold in NY so I decided to turn on my heat. Felt like it wasnt that cold. Later on that day, yellow coolant temp warning comes on and 10 seconds later the red warning comes on.

I pull over about 30 sec later as i was on a bridge and open the bonnet. Everything doesnt seem hotter than normal and coolant level looks ok. No leaks seen.

I hook up the scangauge and start driving again and seemed to hit 240 once but then went back down to 220s.

the next morning i run to the dealer to pick up some coolant and as i was pulling in, the red warning light comes on again with scan gauge showing over 250.

I picked up some coolant and noticed the resevoir was empty. Just filled it up and seems ok now and heat works ok. I will be monitoring over the next day or so.

Just wondering if i should be concerned as I hit over 250 degrees for a couple seconds.

You have a leak in the coolant system. When the heater feels cool even when the car warms up most likely you are low on coolant. Please check this out for common locations, and don't let your MINI overheat. Let us know what you find.

If its the plastic housing main water pump I would go ahead and change that, there is an updated metal housing versions now,,. it will leak from the back lower bolt on the water pump. Check the links above and look for it. You can peak under the passenger side through the wheel well. Jack the car up safety and brace it with a floor jack and peak underneath. Use the pics above linked as reference.

Thanks
