Service Engine Soon

Service Engine Soon
Hey guys, I am sure this question has been asked on here at least a million times but I couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. The "Service engine soon" light came on it my r53 a couple days ago, and I was curious what the cheapest and most effective next step to finding out where the problem is. The car is running flawlessly and I double checked the gas cap was screwed on properly (apparently that can set it off). I checked with the mini dealership here in Portland OR, and they said they charge around $125 to diagnose, but if there is a problem the $125ish goes towards the price for fixing it. Is there a better way to go about this instead of shoveling out that kind of cash just to diagnose? My worry is the problem is minor or that there may not even be a problem. I would hate to spend unnecessary cash this close to the holidays. I also want to make sure the job is done right though and I have a feeling that will come from mechanics who specialize in Mini's. Thanks for the help guys, any advice would be great.

Buy yourself a code reader or go to one of the auto parts stores that scans for free. That will give you the codes to do some research before going to Mini or one of the indy shops. Dynasport is a well know alternative but I had some issues with them and the price seems to now float just slightly under the dealers price without the benefit of a loaner or free espresso.
