2005 R53 fuel problem

I have a 2005 R53 with a fuel problem. I went to turn on the car and it would turn over but wouldn't start. At that time, I suspected fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump fuse or relay, etc etc. Just for the hell of it, I put in two gallons of 93 Octane. After cycling the engine 6 or 7 times, it finally turned over and started. It was rough at first and then I turned it off and then back on. Presto, back to normal BUT I had a flashing check engine light (which went away after getting it started properly). On top of that, the EP is on the speedo where the gear indicator would normally be. Drove it and it runs fine so far. Weird thing is that it is reading at half a tank full of gas. I'm guessing fuel pump but I would appreciate any feedback at all from anyone. Thank you
