CVT died...whats the car worth?

After owning our 2002 R50 for only 3 months, its dead. Tonight my daughter called me from the side of the road. No check engine lights or codes, but it wont move when you put it in D or R...just makes a faint clicking noise. I've dumped enough money in this car (new brakes, electric fan, struts, etc) and ready to be done with it.

What can I expect to sell it for? ...just its weigh in scrap? ...1/2 blue book value? Its a 2002 R50 with 110,000 miles.

A rebuilt CVT looks to cost more than the car is worth. Don't really have the time for a manual transmission swap.

...so frustrated right now.

Sorry. Can't help you on value. But if you part it out you should get some money back.

Before you do that you may want to check with MINI dealer to see if that CVT was previously replaced. There was a class action settlement on the CVT in 2013-2014 time frame and part of the settlement states that ptreviously repaired CVTs have a extended warranty. It's tricky but they did extend coverage. Unfortunately it is too late to make a claim as the cutoff was 2014.

Search google for Mini Cooper cvt settlement.

Location?
Some areas have more mini's needing parts...so value can varry....
Sorry you did not discover the issues of the CVT...
It was a known issue going to about 2004......by the time I ordered my 2005 in the summer of 2004 the cvts were failing regularly....
Good luck.

I'm in the St Louis area, and its the original CVT. Although I thought I did some solid research prior to purchasing, it wasn't until after that I realized how common the CVT failures really were...or the ridiculously high cost of replacing.

After a good nights of sleep I've calmed down a bit and I am rethinking (entertaining the idea at least) the manual swap. Trying to figure a good estimate for the cost of that. ...lots of write-ups that I'm weeding through right now. I'm a fairly capable shade tree mechanic, but have always had Jeeps/4x4's. Working on this little guy has been quite the change of pace.

I have about $4,500 into it at this point...cost of car, new rotors/pads all around, new strut mounts/struts all around, spark plugs, oil/filter change, new electric fan, radiator flush, etc. The car is in great shape (besides the CVT); no rust, good body/paint, etc. Hard to see it go to the crusher and not sure I'd want to deal with trying to parting it out one piece at a time.

For those that have done a CVT to 6-speed swap themselves; what was your total financial investment?

There used to be a couple of guys doing CVT rebuilds, you might try that route.

We are the experts on doing the CVT to 6spd swap as we have done 7 of them in our shop. And I can't count how many ECUs I've reprogrammed for the swap that people just mailed us.
The price will all vary based on how much you pay for all the used parts you need. Going new would cost as much as the CVT so we use all used parts except the clutch and flywheel.
Feel free to call our shop and we'll go over options.
