What years burble/pop? R50/R56/JCW

Thinking about changing our 09 justa to a S or JCW, I know my 2007 R56 S had no pops or burble, and I think 11 got it back

basically I want something more fun and it must have the sound & burble/pops to go with it

R53
r56
jcw ?

I'm leaning towards an R53 2003-6 as there are enough of them the market is competitive

already other cars (135i, 540i, JK and a f150) but we drive the mini most of the time due the mpg difference and a long commute

I only get 32mpg out of our R56 and I got that much out of our R56 S

R56 S 2011-2013 has the P & B's
Not sure about the Factory JCW 2009-2011. 2013 JCW definitely has it.

Your thread would get more attention if it was in the general section. You posted in the MINI E..

My 2007 R52 S JCW (supercharged) has fantastic Pop and Gurgle... I'm tiring to replicate it in my 2004 R53s.

Motor on!

My 03' JCW doesn't hardly burble and pop at all. I've heard that the 05-06 R53's do it a bunch....something about a slightly different tune from MINI that makes them burble and pop more.

My 06 R53 pops and burbles all the time, and it sounds so much more organic than my R59S.

I'm only guessing, and hopefully someone will chime in and clarify; but I think the pop and burble on the R53 was a natural result of the supercharger and how the engine was designed. You can tell the later Gen2 S has the computer controlled pops.

I wouldn't say its natural, or you would have seen it in all model years of the R53. Instead I believe its programmed as well, but the N14 and N18 engines have extra mufflers on the exhaust. The first muffler is the turbo, then you have 2 Catalytic Converters in those engines. So there are more things in the way of making sound in the Turbo engine compared to the Supercharged engine. So that may be the more 'natural' sound you're hearing

It doesn't have anything to do with the supercharger....it's all about the fuel mixture.

There was a TSB on this because owners thought something was wrong with their vehicles. The 05-06 S models that are 6-speed have it, and it's actually controlled by the computer. When tuning, you can "add" more PB. It was between 11-13 that it came back, but, what I remember reading was only in Sport mode.

From a master tech at MINI (not me, a buddy ):

The 2011 switch to the N18 engine brought them back (2012 for the JCW) and it only works in sport mode. It went away for a while because of complaints on the R53 so it was engineered out on the R56 - people complained it was gone so they brought it back for LCI.

I believe on the R53 it was natural, and a side effect of the supercharger. On the 2011+, it is manufactured to only come on in Sport and is caused by introducing excess fuel (a very small amount) into the exhaust manifold. The 3rd gen Cooper S models work the same way.

I would have complained, if my MINI did it.

My 2011 JCW pops and bangs in Sport mode only. So yeah it
seems like after the LCI....(black gauges and black controls were updated)
it was there.
