Gen 1 A/C parts surprise

The a/c in my 2004 MCS failed several years ago; dealer told me the compressor was bad; clutch is fine and there is no leak, its just that the compressor no longer 'compresses.' So I bought a used one from a reputable source and intend to install it myself. I thought I should also install a new receiver/dryer, so I inquired of that same dealer the cost of the part. Big surprise! They claim that the only way the receiver/dryer is available from MINI is part of a package that includes the expansion valve and the condensor, for a package parts price of $561!! Anyone else heard of this? What say our vendor friends - Way, ECS, Pelican?

Of course its not the case. I had to replace the condenser on mine last year, and I went with a Spectra brand which included a new drier.

There are many options out there. Take a look at rockauto's catalog:

http://www.rockauto.com/

I recommend having the system properly evacuated before doing the replacement, and then going back to put the system under a vacuum for at least 30 minutes before recharging.

An independent shop near me charged $70 for the evac and recharge last year.

If you haven't opened the system yet I would first put an ohm meter on the a/c relay socket and test the clutch coil. The compressors for the most part are bulletproof The clutch coil is the weak link

Yes, do check the clutch coil resistance before opening up the system. Here's my write-up on all things related to the clutch coil:

I run the system and I look at the compressor and clutch. I can see the COMPRESSOR turn, NOT JUST THE CLUTCH!

The dryer is separate, but the condenser comes with a dryer.

A/C Receiver Driers

There is an OEM option, aftermarket, or OEM supplier option. It is possible to get it without buying it in a package. Hope this helps!

Be careful buying a cheap condenser/drier - some use a generic drier cartridge you won't be able to find next time it has to be opened.
