Hatch/Trunk alignment

The hatch door on my mini is slightly raised on the left and right side when I compare it to the body.

Is there a way to make the hatch door flush with the body or is this normal?

Check the hinges, and make sure they are not loose or broken ( snaped ) . Also check to make sure those lower adjustable buffer are the same and one is not higher then the other at the bottom,.

Buffer

Diagram , look at # 2 and does it match in alignment to the other side.

If broken or separated:

The hinges are fine. The bumpers are the same height.

I tried turning both bumpers inwards to see if the hatch would be lower when closed. The hatch is still the same.

It might be something where you need to realign the rear hatch. The Bentley Manual here (MC-800-MC06) has a nice step by step process for the alignment on page 412-3. There are a few hatch adjustment points (each hinge, the buffer stops and the latch). Basically you loosen the hatch hinge bolts to allow movement and adjust accordingly. The manual provides gap specifications. Lastly, you can turn the buffer stops until they make contact with the hatch opening to complete it. The manual really has some great info in it so it does pay for itself.

That may help , but if the hinges are bent or rusted at the hinge , it does not help you.

I can see they look to be in good shape. do they look bent on the hinge itself and on the mounts inside and under the rear of the roof.

Has the car been in a rear end collision or wreak ?
