Coolant loss
#1
Add me to the list of people with Cooper S's that suffer from the problem of coolant leaking only when the motor is cold. This is apparently the, now common, problem of a seal behind the water pump leaking until the motor warms up. The result is that the car never appears to be losing coolant, but the coolant mysteriously disappears until the engine is dry (bad) and overheats.
My mechanic ran it all day, pressurized the system, looked at it from underneath, etc. and never saw any leaks. Why? Because he never had the car stone cold. It only leaks for a little while, but over time the little amounts completely drain the system toast the motor.
I am back on my way to the dealership now. Since they have to see the car cold, it will have to be there at least 2 days.
I have read so many reports of this problem that I hope Mini takes this to heart and thinks about a recall and some other accommodation for cars that have overheated at VERY low miles due to this problem. I am nervous that a new motor that runs dry might be damaged in a way that will show later.
This problem is insidious enough that Mini should be doing something about it.
Maybe the car really is British.

Read my post on MINI2. My dealer only replaced the leaking coolant bottle. While at the dealership a visual inspection around the water pump did not show any indications of a leak. However the service advisor did order a new "O"ring seal should I find a puddle of coolant under my car again.

I have the overflow bottle leak. I live 400 miles from the dealer so I have'nt gone to get it fixed. Its mostly just anoying because it slowly drips on the heat shield and smells up the garage. I tried to get the dealer to send me a new bottle to replace this one myself but they would'nt do it. I guess I'll wait until I take it in for an oil change.

Maybe I'm lucky..I only have to have my car in for one day for the same service issue, leaky coolent..but there is major surgury involved..the supercharger has to be removed in order to correct the problem
