Whats wrong with my car!????

Hello everyone,
I am having issues with my fiance's mini cooper. It is a 2010. The codes that it is throwing are :

P0015 "B" Camshaft position timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
P2177 Fuel trim limit exceeded system too lean
P2187 System too lean at idle (Bank 1)
P2011 'A' Camshaft position timing Over-Advanced or system performance (Bank 1)
P2012 'A' Camshaft position timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

Also, it does not let me erase them.
The car seems to have random issues. It used to idle funny, and when taking off and stopping it would studder/drop power type of feeling. Since then I have swapped the coils to see of any change in codes. The idle is fine now and it doesnt studder as much (sometimes when in reverse). I have not been there to witness it myself, but the fiance complains that here recently it will shut off on her as well, when shes at a stop/red light. Even this morning she turned it on to warm up as she got ready, and when she came back out it was off. I have replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the MAF, replaced the camshaft position sensor, swapped the coils, and took out and cleaned the Vanos solenoids.
Any ideas what my next move should be?

Timing chain time. Sounds like you're out of time.

Not a DIY unless you have the cam/crank lock tools and proper tooling.

The dealer will probably charge around $1300 to do it, a qualified indy shop would probably have you out the door for under $800.

It does sound like the timing is bad. It doesn't sound like a major expense, but it is kind of a major issue if the car shuts down at a red light. Shop around for the best price. ASE preferred of course.

From what I have been researching, it all seemed to point towards the timing chain. I was just hoping it wasn't and that it would be something I could fix myself. I guess I need to find a shop now, thanks for the quick response

Not too many timing chain issuses on the Cooper , but it can happen. Get a shop who know about working on MINI and BMWs if you do the timing chain.

2010 R56 MINI Cooper ( NON S )

https://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2010-...Engine/Timing/

Our full kit above has the lastest Gen timing chain tensioner and the chain.

If it is the timing, would i need that kit or just to get it adjusted to the right time?

Depends if its just a slack issues of a chain stretch within a certain degree for the full kit or just the fix ( 11314609482 ). This has to be measure with a tool. 83300493971 https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...and-chain.html

There is no setting back into time. Based off you problems, its most likely a full kit because A. The Chain is stretched beyond length, B. The Timing chain guide are broken/ fallen apart and the timing chain is bouncing around.

This is the Cooper S version, but same set up with the cooper just different full kit part #'s

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...tensioner.html

Those codes don't looks like the HPFP issue I have seen , looks like timing.

Does the engine sounds loud and run like a diesel sometimes , then timing.

There is one problem with the Coopers that can effect timing that's a big bummer. The intake camshaft bearing at the front sprocket can machine itself due to lack of oil or dirty oil and you loose pressure in your VANOS system. Hopefully that's not what you are experiencing, because if it is, it's big buxx.

I'd recommend getting it looked at sooner rather than later and then determining what all you need to buy in order to fix it. You can use this site here to help you find a local indy shop.

One thing that makes me thing its not the chain, is the fact that when the check engine goes off rarely, or when I've had it erased, the car drives fine. So that makes me think its not mechanical. If it was the timing chain it would always run bad. Any ideas?

The HPFP problem almost always begins with trouble starting the engine after it's been sitting. Won't start on first start button press. Might take a few secs before it'll rev with the gas pedal. Eventually won't start at all. Once it gets going it drives fine.

well here recently it starts up just fine. But when I am starting to take off it feels weak, almost like there is a hesitation between me pushing the pedal and the car actually moving. Also, the biggest problem lately is it keeps turning off when starting to move the car, or coming to a stop. Almost every time i pull into a parking spot, it turns off as i slow down and i have to try to restart it multiple times to get out of the middle of the parking lot and into a spot. Same thing at red lights.

The Coopers don't have a HPFP, they only use an intank fuel pump.

Get the car looked at by a proper Euro Specialist.

Definitely sounds like it's out of timing, when a timing chain is loose it will become Over-Advanced and Over-Retarded depending on whether your idling or accelerating. I would refrain from driving it until you have it diagnosed or risk possible engine damage. Have you noticed any unusual sounds from the engine lately? It could also be the Vanos solenoid which is responsible for camshaft timing.

The codes are very useful in diagnosing the issue with a dealer or repair shop, it's best not to delete any codes as it won't fix you cars issues. If it were a bad fuel pump I seriously doubt you would get Over-Advanced or Over-Retarded codes, you would just get System too lean or Fuel Rail Pressure Low etc.
