P0957 - Thermostat stuck open?

Hey guys,
So today my 07 MCS threw the error code above. I did a little research and was able to diagnose it. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back all day.

What is everyones input on this? Is it just a sensor or the entire housing?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tyler

If its stuck , its usually the bad thermostat on the interior, then you have to replace the whole thermostat. It its the sensor only you get coolant temp error signal , like not in range. Or the fan runs all the time and you dont have a coolant leak, and the coolant level is fine.

Here the thread with all the coolant issue and thing to check while you are ther.

11537534521 We do have the bremmen ( same design as oem ) one in stock the Genuine MINI ones just went on BO.

I had a new thermostat stick open after about 900 miles. I run a ScanGauge and noticed that the engine temp didn't get up to normal while we were on a trip during the winter about a year ago. I ended up covering the entire lower and upper grills and the engine temp got a little higher. We had enough heat in the car during all of this. I pulled the thermostat when we got home and the internal piece was tightly wedged sideways....replaced the thermostat and no issues since.

Bentley Manual doesn't show P0957. This list HERE says P0957 Auto Shift Manual Mode Circuit Low. P0597 is Thermostat Heater Control Circuit/Open or Program map thermostat, control-activation: open circuit. I'm assuming that's probably the code you are seeing. Good info in this thread HERE.

How many miles and has it ever been replaced? We have them HERE or if you're wanting to do a complete cooling system over haul, doing the water pump and a few other items as well at the same time, we have some great kits HERE. Let me know if you have any questions.

My daughter just bought a 2011 R56 and three days later it lit a check engine light and I read the P0597 code. I've been checking threads to learn about this, since the factory service manual stupidly doesn't list this code. The light has gone on and off a couple of times. I tried my Bavarian Technic device on it and it (nice to know it works on both our E90-series BMWs and the Mini) showed the fault as a past event but with no error present. I reset the code and the check engine light hasn't re-appeared after one day.

She hasn't observed any warnings about heat after driving up 2500 feet on a mountain highway. My guess is that either the problem is intermittent or the thermostat is trying to stick open, which would be OK since it gives us time to fix it. However, I sure don't want her to fry the engine and unfortunately there's no temp gauge.

Question - if this warning and code has showed, is this an immediate service need? I can get the part ordered and there are a couple of excellent videos on YouTube showing how to change the part. I like the one where the gent changing the thermostat housing shows it to the camera and pronounces it "the single most over-engineered piece I've ever seen."

Hello,

A code P0597 or P0957 ?

It is its a 2011 R56 MINI Cooper or 2011 R56 MINI Cooper S. Possible if the P0957 that it is on the beginnings of sticking.

It's a 2011 R56 Cooper S, and I confirmed the code as P0597. The Mini service manual doesn't list the code at all, and neither does the reference book that came with my OBDII code reader, so I went online for info.

Everything I can find online refers to this as: P0597 Thermostat Heater Control Circuit Open ... like this page http://www.obd-codes.com/p0597

I may be in the wrong thread with this code, but the code P0957 seems to indicate: Auto Shift Manual Mode Circuit Low.

Are the bolts for that housing BMW/Mini's famous (and unnecessary) single use aluminum bolts? I see that your kit has options with and without bolts.

I have two BMWs and I keep getting caught needing to replace bolts unexpectedly while doing minor work. I have to order bolts, then go back a few days later and re-do the work to replace the bolts. (I have also learned about that evil little device, the torque angle meter.)

Also, is the electrical thermostat adapter is needed because of a change in design or wiring? If so, it must be because the thermostat housing design has changed since the 2011 Mini was built, correct?

When i did mine , the old bolts were a little cruddy, that's why we include them ,and you want a nice clean seal on the side of the head with the gasket so you dont have a leak. Yes there was an update with the senor design.

Well, we're going to try and get the dealer to replace the thermostat housing even though the 30-day warranty they provided is on internal lubricated parts - which this is not. But she drove the car for 4 days before the fault appeared, which darn sure isn't long.

I did read in this forum that one member got his replaced under an emissions warranty - which sounds to me like the dealership did him a favor and either hid it under that warranty or just told him that to make him feel good.

BUT - my motto is: "If you don't ask, you don't get." So she will ask.

Yea, most are "good will" if out of warranty. If they do it for you, that's great.

I am IMPRESSED with Ralph Schomp Mini in Denver - to the point that I need to compliment them.

My daughter called in, and they said they would replace the thermostat housing under their 30-day warranty, even though it's explicitly only covering internal engine and transmission lubricated parts. That's a $700 (dealer) repair that they didn't have to do. But when the warning light came on 4 days after she got the cat (2011 R56), she sure was disappointed until they stepped up.

I could have done it myself for under $150, but if I don't need to, why should I?

AND - they gave her a brand new Cooper Clubman with 50 miles on it to drive as a loaner for two full days!!

I gotta say that is really stepping up for customer satisfaction. My hat's off to them.

Ya, I've always heard very good things about Ralph Schomp (I'm from Colorado). They are always sponsoring a lot of car related events out that way. Glad they took care of you and your daughter and you can enjoy the MINI once again.

P0597 popped up in my R55 last week. I swapped the housing and all is good with the world now. Pretty easy swap albeit a bit messy. I was able to knock it out in under 3 hrs including beer breaks.

Once you do it and get the hang of it, it does not take long. Being careful with the wires can take some time and then getting everything in place.
