I purchased a Craftsman 36mm socket Cat. #44248 @ $6.99 and a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter Cat. #4258 @ $3.99. I took the socket to a machine shop and had them cut it off until it was very shallow (about 1/2" functional depth). The socket with adapter (so it will fit my torque wrench) stands only 1 5/8" tall affording ample clearance for tightening the oil filter canister to spec. The machine shop didn't even charge me to cut the socket and I was a total stranger off the street to them! Total investment $11.00 not counting the torque wrench of course.
