R53 pistons and rods?

R53 pistons and rods?
So I have my 05 S engine at the machine shop getting the crank turned and the rods recon'ed. They called and said crank is good but will be 10 under. The bad is 3 rods out of 4 are junk and the pistons to. Why would I need to get new pistons if only the rods are junk?

Sounds like you stated the pistons are junk too. Did I read that correctly. I'm curious what happened to your engine. What oil you use, and oil change interval. I just finished (9,000 miles ago now) rebuilding my S, and at the time it had over 365,000 miles on it. All my rods showed no wear, as well as the crank. Neither required any machining.
Just curious to hear your maintenance routine vs mine.

They didn't say the pistons were junk. Just that I would need to get new ones, but I could have misunderstood them. I call them back tomorrow. I bought the car not running at a car auction. It didn't run. The timing chain guides were junk. So I put a timing set in it. I managed to get it running once, but it rattled like crazy. I didn't discover the destroyed rod bearings until after I pulled the engine and took apart. I never would have thought spun bearings in a car with less then 50k on it. Whats sad is I bought another engine off craigslist and it has the same problem. I kick myself every day for not pulling the pan when I bought it. So now I'm just want to get it back together without wasting anymore money. Maybe I can part out the other engine.

Ah, ok. I've been following your other thread, but didn't make the connection
My guess would be that they are showing some kind of damage that they aren't comfortable putting back into the car. The machine shop should be able to explain there reasoning. If everything measures up, and there is no honing required, I would think you should be able to get parts off the donor engine.
Sorry to hear about all your troubles.
