r53 Interior Blower Motor Intermittent
I've done extensive searches here, without much luck...**I have a 02 MCS (May 02 build date) with auto climate control. I'm getting an intermittent problem with the blower for the heating/AC not working. Note: All the climate controls are lit up as usual, all the controls work, but the blower just isn't blowing (although I can feel hot/cold escaping from the vents, as I drive). Makes no difference which setting it's on - auto, air-con, windscreen, footwell etc. Makes no difference if I change the fan setting. The blower will then come on, out of the blue, a few minutes after starting my journey or shut off after a little rattle.
The problem happened again a couple of days ago - no blower after starting the car. The driving down road after hitting a bump.. It came right on, then another bump and off it went, and it kept going through this cycle over of off and on again.
Yesterday, now it's barely working.. Most of the time being stuck not working and only occasionally turning on.. Maybe bad ground, bad relay.. Something that causes it to go on and off like this?
Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? As I say, it's not a problem with the heat/ac, just the blower and I truly feel it's only electrical related to the blower, and not the blower itself. I want to fix this myself - where do I start? Because as of now and the blower hasn't come on at all during my 60 mile drive to work. Changing temp made no difference this time.**I've seen a post mentioning relays: http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-gen...t-working.html. Not quite sure which relay is K4. There's an R4 in the engine compartment (see the map below), but I don't know if it's the right relay for the blower? The symbols on my map differ from the ones posted in other threads on here!**I'm worried now that the blower unit itself has packed up (or the resistor that controls it's speed). How easy is it to get to the unit and swap it out? I have moderate skills but enjoy a challenge.
Any advice greatly appreciated.**Edit:After more investigation and reading about the blower motor resistor pack, I decided to locate it to check. Guess what....there is no resistor pack in the location that is specified at both RealOEM and the Haynes manual: RealOEM.com BMW R53 Cooper S Resistor/temperature sensor. Instead there is just a blanking plate in that location - see photo below. I am 100% sure I am looking in the correct place. I'm absolutely stumped. Surely there must be a resistor pack but WHERE???? I've found another post from somebody with the same problem, no resistor pack in this location, but alas the thread wasn't concluded: Blower/air con resistor fitting *Anybody know of an alternative location for the blower resistor?
Note: Today, I took it to the BMW Independent shop we have here in town, and they tell me it needs a new Blower Motor, $2800 to fix!!!!! Something tells me it's a bad ground, or relay, or blower resistor, something that is replaceable within reason, I don't want to junk her because of a climate control issue.
Does anyone have any ideas! Pretty please, I'm not opposed to bribing, or sending beer!
Thank you,
Robert

What's the best way to get to the connector? I'd love to try the wd40 approach but I can't see how to get to It.

I'm guessing you mean inside of the car correct? I guess not to sound to ignorant, I'm not sure where the right hand side of the blower is physically located... Is that inside of the car, near the carpet line.. in the center... It appears that's where the main connect might be... But I haven't checked.. You don't by some chance have a picture do you ?
Regardless, you've been the most help in this journey.... So thank you.

Yes inside the car on the left side of the right hand side footwell

did you ever sort this issue.....having the same problem 2002 R53... august build
On mine, I took out the glove box and noticed the fan stops working when car has been parked in hot weather........I can either tap the housing where the cabin filter goes...fan starts right up, or I can reach in and manually turn fan (with ac on) and fan will start blowing.......
anyone have this issue........seems to only act up in hot weather...
