Full engine power no longer available on accelerater pedal release

Good day.

I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S R56, and the problem I am having is that when I left off the gas very quickly, I get the half yellow engine light (Full engine power no longer available).

There is no noticeable difference in engine power, or how it runs, and the light will go out after a while of driving again.

I originally thought it was when I was getting on the throttle quite heavily, but I can peg the gas almost to redline, and as long as I let off the gas slower, no light. If I let of quickly, the light appears.

I have scanned with my OBD2 code reader, and there are no stored codes. The only other thing I noticed in regard to the running of the engine, is that sometimes there is some idle fluctuation, especially after coming to a full stop.

Has anybody encountered a similar issue before, or might have any ideas as to what it may be?

Thank you.

I had something similar and it was the VANOS solenoid.

Thanks for the reply.

Were you just able to pull it and clean it out? Which solenoid was it?

Could be anything from a VANOS solenoid to an unmetered air leak. Have you inspected your valve cover around the PCV for signs of failure?

A problem like idle fluctuation, or only having problems at idle would indicate a leak as well.

PCV failures are very common on these cars.

I was just on a road course and this exact thing is happening now. Yellow light comes on when i release the gas pedal quickly also followed by a backfire pop sound. I tried using a generic code reader and no Codes. If i ease off of the gas its fine even if i get into the boost and full gear pulls. when the yellow light come on it does reduce boost, i see was about 5psi vs the 19ish. my code reader had a feature to clear "dtc codes" dont know what that means but if i do so it clear the yellow light and i have full boost again. Until i quickly release the gas pedal.

I also have idle fluctuation, but that is only caused after the yellow engine light come on. I clear it and it idles fine. I checked for leaks around all the tubing and tighten all the clamps.

get your codes checked with a Mini capable scanner. It sounds like what was happening to mine when I had a Code 2885 Boost pressure deviation. Most likely caused by your diverter valve. It is easy to change. If you end up replacing it use the one from Way Motor Works. It's roughly $80 and worked very well.
