Clutch noise - dual mass flywheel or input shaft bearing?

So my car is making some noises coming from the clutch/transmission area. Here's the symptoms:
  • About 1/3 of the time, when idling in neutral, the car makes a rattling noise, kind of like a diesel. See the video below for the noise, it's loudest at the end. The noise increases speed with engine speed.
  • When I push in on the clutch, this noise goes away completely.
  • If I let out on the clutch slowly, the noise sometimes won't come back.
  • Sometimes when starting out in first gear, there's this shudder noise.
  • When decelerating/braking in gear, there's this lurching, unsmooth judder around 2k RPM. Not sure if it's related to this issue or something with the engine. But if it's a dual mass flywheel problem, I could see why it would lurch when in gear.

I'd love any input on what could be the cause of these symptoms. Pretty positive it's one of these two issues, so I know I'm going to be doing a clutch replacement in the future, but if it's the input shaft bearing, I'm thinking I don't want to drive on that for too long or I'll damage the transmission. It's the 6speed as well, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

I have never seen input shaft bearings be a problem on these cars, I'd say that you're in for a clutch. I wouldn't advise driving too much on it with it being that loud, we've worked on multiple cars that have had the throw out bearing explode causing severe damage to the transmission bell housing.

Valeo Clutch Kit Is a great kit and gets rid of the DMF. We've got them on hand and ready to ship, along with free shipping on orders over $130 until the first of the year.

Not sure it's the throwout bearing, as wouldn't that only be making noise when I'm pressing on the clutch? The noise goes away then, and that's the only time the throwout bearing comes into play. I've had a car where the throwout bearing died too, it sounded nothing like this. That noise is like a rabbit squealing when it dies, this is more diesel rattling.

And yeah, I've read a lot about how the 6 speeds are bullet proof, so that's why I'm unsure its the input shaft bearing. The symptoms point to it though, but I'm also unfamiliar with dual mass flywheels.

Heard great things about that clutch kit, especially from the Mod Mini youtube series on changing the clutch. Will definitely be going with that one, good to know about the free shipping, thanks!

I don't know how every thing works, but when the throwout bearing starts to go in these cars they make noise when the clutch pedal isn't being pressed. So if the noise goes away when you press the clutch pedal, I'd tend to think throwout bearing as well. I've never heard one that was that loud, so either that means it's about to blow up or it's something else, or I don't know what I'm talking about.

Input shaft bearings may not be a common problem but it happens. I replaced my clutch only to still have the noise. Had to replace the transmission soon after, not fun paying for that labor twice.

Oh yeah, I plan on replacing every seal and bearing I can get to when I'm in there. Servicing the supercharger oil as well. Only want to take the damn thing apart once!
