Odd noise, diagnostic help

2002 R53 Cooper S with 140xxx on the odometer. Stock other than the intake.

If if this has several topics that I could have found I apologize ahead of time. I searched and searched but only came up with speculation. My issue is I do not have space to do exploratory surgery to find the cause and the owner cannot afford the parts AND the labor at this point in time. So when I go for it I would like to be as prepared as I can be to minimize the time the car is in pieces in the apartment lot. The noise started as a slight ticking and has progressed which can be heard in the video below. It is now almost like a vacuum cleaner, tick, and the obvious rattle and roll of something broken. The noise seems like it is coming from the pulley side of the supercharger. The belt tensioner looks okay and it does not overheat. If the PTO were failing I figured the noise would predominantly be found near the water pump. Am I wrong? Any help is appreciated

Does sound like some type of pulley/bearing

1.) Could be the crank pulley, you have a rubber residue on the other parts?
2.) Could be the belt tensioner idler pulley.
3.) Could be the Alternator
4.) Could be the AC pulley.
5.) Could be the Supercharger.

You need to take the belt off. Nos 2, 3 and 4 should be easy to diagnose by spinning the pulley yourself. The Crank Pulley if the culprit would also move in and out.

Post your question in the R53 thread, you should get more views and more ideas.

You're right, I do need to pull the belt. It's just been too cold and wet outside to give it any time. Thanks!

I'd also echo checking the pulleys. Definitely check the belt tensioner. We have some articles here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...tech_index.htm that can help you with those items and more.
