Door and Trunk Lock Problem

Hello,

I've looked for an answer to my current Mini problem (2002 HB Cooper) but have been unable to find anything on-point.

A few weeks ago the key fob stopped working on my Mini. I replaced the battery, but still nothing. I manually unlocked the driver's side door (the 2002 Coopers do not have a key entry for the passenger side) and tried to unlock the car using the central switch. Nothing happened. Hence, the passenger side door and the trunk are permanently locked.

I also went to fill-up on gas, and the tank lock appears to also be locked. I pried it open, but I suspect that too is related.

Any suggestions?

There is a reset or re-learn process to go through after the key-fob battery change.
I think it's in the handbook.
I don't know why the central locking switch wouldn't work, though.
Try disconnecting the car battery overnight, perhaps?

I just checked - pages 22-25 of the handbook have all the info.
ONE press of the open button unlocks the drivers door & gas cap.
TWO presses unlocks the passenger door & the hatch.
A LONG press unlocks AND opens the hatch.

Try pulling the passenger door inside opening handle twice - it seems to work on my 02 Cooper S although the handbook doesn't mention it.
You can tell if the doors are locked or not by the little black button on the top edge of the door - later cars don't have these, I believe.
Try putting the key in the door lock, twist to the left & hold it for 5 seconds.

2 links for the early '02-'05 2-button key fobs:

Instead of prying your gas door open use the auxiliary gas door release. Since you cannot open the rear hatch - Open the rear hatch buy lifting the rear seat and pulling the emergency release. The rear hatch will open. Then open up the drivers side rear access panel in the boot. Reach up in the cavity towards the gas filler tube, there will be another pull. pull. the gas door will open.

I've fixed dozens of keys and put new batteries in most of them. I don't remember a single one needing "re-learning" to work with the car- even the ones that had a dead battery for who knows how long before they arrived. The hold the key over thing should work to unlock the whole car. If it doesn't work with the switch there is probably something wrong with the central locking computer. Does the red LED light up on the circuit board when you press either button? If so the key is probably transmitting a signal just fine and there may be a problem with the receiver.

Here's one more good link to a site written by a fellow NAM member:

Good re-pairing procedures on that site as well if you want to try it again.

The guy that made that site specifically told me that for 02 if the remote loses sync you're screwed. Also very early 02 models don't have the manual Hatch release cable.

When I use my key fob to lock or unlock the car I hear a click however the locking mechanism does not actually lock or unlock the doors.

The lights flash twice for unlock and they flash once for lock so I know the car is getting the signal from the key fob.

Also when I press the hatchback release button on the key fob the hatchback does unlock.

If I long press the unlock button all the windows roll down and the moonroof opens.

But if I long press the lock button the windows do not go up and the moonroof does not close.

This is a 2012 base model mini Cooper two-door.

any suggestions would be helpful and also this is my first time posting in the forum so if anybody has any formatting pointers for me that is great and I'm welcome to hear any and all suggestions.

Thank you
