Paddle shift question

I was wondering if anyone has come across a situation like I did the other day. I was driving and decided to try out the paddle shifters on our 03' Base. It ran through the gears good and at the end I was cruising at about 35 MPH in 4th. Out of the blue it down shifted to 2nd. I caught it in time so not to over rev the motor. Thoughts?

I've seen similar with or without the paddles being involved on '09, '12, and my current '14. I am always so surprised I look at my hands and ask Did I just inadvertently shift it?
And sometimes there is a terrible clunk like the drivetrain locked up for a split second. Ugh!

Wow hard figure why they haven't sorted these transmissions at your vintage of Mini...
