convertible top cable popped out

Hi y'all. I hope this is in the right forum. My top has never worked right since I bought the 2005 mini convertible used a few months ago. Now I maybe see why--the cable on the right (which popped out of its slot) is missing its counterpart on the left, as you'll see in the pics. Any suggestions? Can this be fixed? A reputable shop told me the top had to be replaced, but I'm not sure if they every really found the problem
Passenger side--cable popped out of slot.

Driver side--no cable!

Hi again. I finally watched the videos--well, the first 2.5, until he started putting it back together. The problem is, my tension cables are loose on the other end, not the front like in the videos. You can see from my pics what I mean. Any suggestions?
