It costs way too much, but there is no way around it. I bought my car used, and was lucky enough to get both key fobs with it.

Bummer...I still needed one key for the second Mini that I purchased.

I recommended MINI of Peabody to a MINI owner earlier this month (Feb 2020) and they responded a few days ago that they were able to order from them via the mail. $143 for the round fob, $33 for the pull out key and $13.50 shipping via UPS. This owner is in New Jersey so they don't require an in-person visit.

Hope this helps-

Val

Yes, just went to the website and the key fobs are listed as "not for sale". Will go with Peabody!

Digested this thread and decided to reach out to MINI Peabody...

as of Nov 2022, the cost for a 2nd key fob is $360 + tax through MINI Peabody

I also checked my local MINI in Ramsey, NJ - the cost there is $395 + tax

Not surprising, just passing along the updated info

Not Anymore...

After nearly ten years & 92,000 miles I traded my '13 Clubman a couple weeks ago. Done w/exorbitant dealer shop rates, ludicrous mark-ups for OEM parts.

Need a clutch?
Take the engine out.

Need a timing chain & guides?
Take the engine out.

Why spend $6,000 in repairs on a vehicle that's worth maybe $5,000 in trade given that something else pricey to get fixed'll break soon?

Vehicles not well-suited to NA driving conditions.

Integrated key ($35.04 at Seattle MINI)

66123456368
Radio remote control (159.12 at Seattle MINI)

Another data point, Nov 2022: $662 for replacement 2017 key fob/key in San Francisco

And another data point from Marin Mini: $395 for fob and key + $225 to program for comfort access. There's only 2 positions for comfort access keys so if you lose one, you need to pay to get the new one associated with one of the positions.

You got rooked man.

Neither of those jobs require the removal of the engine.

the closest is the clutch change, where you have to drop the transmission. But that's relatively easy compared to removing the engine.

The jobs are easier (other than all the things you need to remove in order to remove the engine) if you take the engine out, but it's not required. If they told you it had to come out, they were charging you more to make their jobs a little easier and pad thier pocketbook a bit more....

If not all you do is put the new fob in the slot and start the car and it finishes programming itself to the car. Keys and fobs can only be ordered from a MINI dealer, anyone that sells them on the internet and says take them to the dealer for programming won't work.
can the comfort page be added to a mini that doesn’t have it? I would love to just keep fob in my pocket.

You could, but to find a separate wiring harness, sensors, and CA module may not be cheap. Not only that, you have to change the keyfob as in program a CA fob and add the option to the CAS.
