2009 MINI Cooper EGS Fault
Hello!
My yellow check engine light came on two weeks ago in my 2009 MINI Cooper hatchback. I brought it to our local MINI dealership’s service department today, and was told after inspection that fault code 4E89 had fired multiple times but that when they ran tests, everything was to spec. They had reset the system and the light has switched off, so they thought it might be a fluke. However, when I picked up my car, the light came back on again at the dealership. It was the same fault code. They said my EGS is bad and will be over $1900 to replace.
I’m not very knowledgeable about cars, but wanted to see if anyone had experienced this fault before and see what happened. I did not have the part replaced yet, and am preparing myself to either pay the $1900 or take on a car payment in the coming weeks or months. Does anyone know how long you can drive your car with this type of issue? Does anyone have any advice or first-hand experience they can share? All of my car’s service has taken place at our local MINI dealership since the purchase of the car, and it is otherwise excellent condition.
Thank you so much!
Lauren

If the valve body is shot, then you can buy it from ebay and have a shop replace it, put new ATF, and filter.

Not this specific issue but something related to the torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC).
The car was a 2013 flooded with 3k miles on it. I ended up replacing the transmission since it was cheaper than the valve body. I did the replacement myself in the driveway
with 65k, the ATF is about burned by now and dirty from metal shavings. even though it is a " sealed" transmission, people are now starting to flush the fluid every 40k or 50k.
I think the S and non-S have the same transmission as long as they are from the same generation cars 2007-2010.
how much are they quoting you to replace the part?
