Halp! Misfire, Ticking, Need Direction
Hey NAM Peeps,
So over time, my engine started having regular ticking noises on cold starts n such that eventually disappear seconds later or after the engine warmed up. Now it is getting obnoxious and it can after the car only sits and our or so and it takes longer to go away.

What I notice:
- Loud Ticking
- Rough Idle/Misfire? Sound like a subaru
- Eventually, after driving the car a little ways, it all goes away.
- ticking matches engine rpm
- Losing coolant (filling up the tank about once every two weeks)
- Some plastics (timing chain guide material) and very fine metal particulates in the oil (blackstone lab said possibly head gasket and that there was a little lead but nothing to be concerned about at the moment)
What I've done:
- Changed oil
- Checked spark plugs, they're carboned a little and look normal
- Replaced timing chain tensioner (yet the issue persists)
- Stethoscope trick but it seems like it is the same noise all around the valve cover.
I probably just need to pull the head but I really rather not bother is maybe this is bad spark plugs? bad injectors? stretched timing chain and bad guides? shot lifters? Coolant leaking pistons and causing misfire till it burns off? The pistons don't look steam cleaned and neither to the spark plugs...

Dont wait for codes:
1- accessory belt check (Don't think that is relevant)
2- spark plug appearance test - Blackened and not steam cleaned.
3- coolant pressure test - Leaks a little by the thermostat ( already new that)
4- compression test (160,160,150,160)
5- remove valve cover and see what's up.

Fact, headgasket is leaking for sure, that's obvious. The obnixious tapping noise and odd firing pattern is the weird part.

Depending on the leak and between which cyls, it could be back feeding another cyl or advance feeding another...
as for no. 1 in my check list, I had a NAM member come with a knocking noise and was checked by a dealer and another shop. he was told spun bearing and need new engine!
so far so good? well, when i check it, it was a chipped accessory belt! $10 fix.
