Vanos

I have an intermittent problem. I get a code telling me the VANOS has an issue. I've looked for the valve on line, but every picture I can find shows it in the front of the engine. There's nothing in that spot on my engine.

I have a 2008 Mini Cooper S R56. I would replace the solenoid, but where is it?

The N14 engine only has one on the intake side of the engine, here's a "How To" for it. https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart..._Replacing.htm

I don't know if I have an N14, but I do know those instructions are for the normally aspirated engine. I have a turbo.

From 2007 thru July 2010 the Mini Cooper S had the N14 engine, which has the turbo. The how to I linked in my previous post shows you how to change the part on the N12 mini engine, but the vanos solenoid is in the same place for the N14 engine (engine you have) and other engines similar. Here's another article on how to get to the vanos, scroll down to Figure 19 on how to get access to it.

Here's a picture of where it is for the N14 engine.

Yes if you have an 08 S you have the N14 engine.

The solenoid is on the back of the head above the timing chain tensioner. Pretty easy to replace as we see them fail often so we keep them in stock.

Thanks gents. That answers my questions. Not the easiest to get to, but not too bad considering this car.

OK, next question...

What is the difference between the $180 part and the one for $61? What do I get for triple the price? What do I lose by paying 1/3rd?

There are also generic replacements on ebay for about $30.

I split the difference and bought Gates brand at around 60 per. Works fine so far.

How long since you installed it?

Only about a month. Installed on an R56 base model, so two installed with two new Bosch brand position sensors. Sensors and solenoids are fairly simple devices, so they shouldn't fail too soon. But, since a relatively simple replacement job I was willing to take some risk on the lower priced units. We'll see...fingers crossed. Now, the failed water pump and thermostat housing are a different story - Mini branded parts for those.
