R57 turbo warranty extended??
hi all,
i just got a letter today from mini saying my warranty on the turbo has been pushed to 10years/120k miles.
unfortunatly my car has a 150k so im wondering why it’s extended and what if anything i can do to prevent or at least plan for it going out.
they were very specific about saying its not a recall or tsb in the letter and the only numbers or code i could find on it didnt pull up anything on google other than an injector tsb on bmws (not minis).
The code is: M-ELWR 2017 Engine Turbocharger 10Y120M.
anyone got any info on this? Or can point me to an existing thread please?

It's a MINI USA extended warranty of 10 years/ 120k miles on the turbos. They've proven to be a bit of a problem over the years, like thermostats, water pumps, HPFPs, FRMs, etc.
Since you've got 150k miles you fall out of warranty anyways.
We just had this pass our desk this morning as well.

since i had the turbo replaced when i 1st got the car (when it was under 120k) what do you think the chances are getting reimbursement on that? It was pretty expensive if I remember right, like $+3500...

You'll have to contact them for the reimbursement portion of it, I know with the thermostat and water pump dealings that we had customers who were eligible for reimbursement for work done prior to the warranty extension.

My interpretation of it would be the same as the HPFP warranty; that the original unit is covered, whether it's a JCW or stock car within the 10 year/ 120k mile, but don't take that as gospel.

Just out of curiosity (because i work on deisel engines all day).
What is the cost at the dealership to replace a turbo for an n18? And do they replace the cat/downpipe, oil lines and all?
i see on the internet, just the price of a new oe turbo is about $2200, and if all the other parts are changed with it, it would be around 3,000-3,500 in parts alone?

The wastegates wear out and don't properly seal to build drive pressure, so you are stuck with a near constant underboost issue. I've not replaced near the amount of turbos due to bearing play as I have for severely worn wastegates.

i ask because i how sensitive these modern cats are to contamination and i would think they’d be oil soaked??

if it was done by the dealer you may be able to get them to retroactively do it. they did with the hpfp on mine, cut me a check for about 1400 bux within a week

so i will have to turn in a service invoice from my own shop to their corporate place on the letter, and im just wondering how thats gonna go. All my techs including myself are ase certified master techs so most companies i deal with dont have a problem with it (cummins, freightliner, gm, ford etc) but i have no idea about foreign car companies like bmw/mini seeing a bus repair place doing the work.

Again, just my interpretation of it; but if you do the repairs on your own, they would reimburse you for part cost, but if you have an invoice that shows parts & labor they would reimburse the job, but we seen customers who had documentation of water pump or thermostat replacement that were only reimbursed parts and partial labor. Which is still better than nothing.

oh yea no I totally figured that, alldata shows it gives 7.3 hours for customer pay and 5.2hrs for warranty (which is im sure what they will pay on).
