R53 - p0171

Hello group,

I have an R53, with 101K miles. Within the last 500 miles, I've had the fuel pump and filter changed (by a nearby BMW tech shop). Also, I have a 15% pulley that I also had the belt changed too.

The other day got a CEL and checked for codes. It's indicating a P0171. I know this MINI does not have a MAF, but (2) MAPS.

I was planning to pull the MAP to see if it's dirty. Also, I plan to check for any leaks around the SC clamps, etc. (Later today I have some time off to do these checks).

Any other thoughts or guidance?

TIA,
-Jav

Im getting the same code on my R53 and previously on R56 I believe its the last gas station I filled up at. Both happened after filling up at the same station. Filled the R53 with 93 no ethanol today I will see if it comes back on on ride home tonight

interesting, I've only ever used top tier fuel (for ever what that's worth). Plus, I've run some techron through her from time to time too.

That code is generated via input from seven different sensors; fuel system, canister load, MAF, TPS stability, engine speed and coolant temperature.

All I can say this happened a few weeks ago on my R56 before work filled up at a gas station as it was convient , on my 85 mile commute check engine light came on with P0171 put 93 octane in with no ethanol light never came on again . Today I filled up R53 same station for convience @ 545am , check engine light came on code P0171 filled it up with 93 octane no ethanol and I will see on my home tonight if it comes on again. I Did look at temps and other items via my scanner the R53 was at 185 temp and MAP HG was 12 at idle.

Both cars run and idle great

took out the MAP, looked rather clean to me. I used a cloth and carefully wiped off the housing. didn't touch the sensor.

My son has been driving this car now. And mentioned that he has to keep up the rev's a bit, otherwise it sounds like it'll nearly stall out. (after work, I'll take her out and about for another road test).

The car sat overnight and I went out to start it up this afternoon. Turned her over, but she wouldn't catch. Tried it at least 4 or 5 times. The engine just didn't seem right turning over. Either not enough speed, or compression wasn't so good. It just "felt" odd to me. The battery is rather new too.

(This is just a seat of my pants observation). Then on the 6th time, she caught, and I really had to pump and feather the throttle until she caught. She was running really rough and "bogging down", and I had to pump/feather for about 20 seconds. Then she smoothed out. Idled just fine after that. Though when I hit the throttle to rev her up, she kind of faded slightly, and then caught up.

I shut her off, and tried again three times, of which she fire up just normal each time. (It's a nice 90F day today, so the weather is nice from a temp perspective).

P0171 if I remember correctly is to lean on bank one. in the case of your R53 that would be your up stream o2 sensor. common causes of this are vac leaks and or a bad O2 sensor. I would also check for leaks on the super charger horns.
