You need a special tool that turns the piston and pushes it back, you'll risk damaging the dust boot, if you don't use the tool'

Yes, I know about the tool, and I have one arriving tomorrow from Amazon. I was able to rotate the pistons with needle-nose pliers, but they didn't seem to be moving in or out, so my question is which direction to rotate the piston, and is it the same on both calipers?

I believe its a combination of rotate and push in.
