common N14 engine problems.

common N14 engine problems.
Hello mini mafia. I thought I would post here, just in case it helps someone. I am in the process of rebuilding an N14 engine out of a 2009 clubman. I have done 3 mini engines, fixing the death rattle, and replacing everything that is broken. (I really don't claim to be a pro, just have some experience). in all three engines, basically the same thing was wrong:
1. the top timing chain guide is broken at the base of the metal, where it bolts into the head.
2. the rest of the timing chain was ok, including the lower sprocket, and chain itself. The plastic chain tensioner guides on either side were fine. (I would still definitely check them)
3. on one engine, the chain jumped timing and bent some valves, but only the smaller exhaust valves.
4. (and here is the kicker) in all three engines, some of the broken timing chain gudes fell into the oil pump chain chamber, it is a little black plastic snap on cover. In all three engines, some of the timing chain guides were broken and in the little sprocket box thingy.
I wasn't even going to check on this new engine, but I am glad I did. That little piece of plastic might have been slowly chewed up, but it also might have jammed in there and caused havoc. I'm just mentioning this in case it helps...
