Same engine auto vs manual?

I am looking for an engine for my 07 S Manual. I know my wife's Passat has different crankshafts for the auto and manual. Any problem putting an auto engine in a manual?

The only difference I'm aware of is that the transmission mount is different between the manual and the automatic. What you can do is pull up the last 7 of each car's VIN and go to realoem.com to look up the engine part numbers (or crankshaft part numbers). According to the Bentley service manual, '07 MINIs come with either the N12 (non-turbo) or N14 (turbo) engine in '07. In later years that changes to the N16 and the N18 respectively. One of the big differences with the later engines is the variable oil pressure system. The oil pump includes a servo valve to regulate oil pressure. There are other changes too.

both engines are the same. why couldnt you rebuild yours?

in general:
N12 is 07-10 hardtop non s
N14 is 07-10 turbo
N16 is 11-14 hardtop (15 conv)
n18 is 11-14 hardtop (15 conv) also has two versions. one with continental HPFP and the other with Bosch HPFP (after second half of 2012 i think)

Because for the price of all the #@$% special tools you need, you could buy a good used engine.

I am considering rebuild, just looking at my options. Yes tools are expensive but then you have them forever.

I see you are just up the road from me. Any advice on places to get parts or head work done? How about tools?

A used engine can fail too. the yard will tell you it ran good, but you still have to check the chain and maybe seals. most rebuilds dont pass 600 if done DIY style.

first you need to assess the damage. then make a wish list of what you want to replace. I use all websites to find the best deals anywhere from ebay, rmeuropean, ecs, pelican, fcp, to car-part.com

head work...I never had to take a head to shop. hand clean it and some valve lapping and you're good to go.

if the vac seized, you need to inspect the sprockets for cracks, and the lower half of the engine block. sometimes the chain chews right through the oil dipstick crown/opening.

locking tools and compression test tools where my long term investment.

Thanks. I have not even pulled it in the garage yet...maybe next week. From what I read the Vacuum Pump must have seized up. I will inspect all the sprockets. My main concern with the head is the valve guides. I've read a lot that they fall out. Just wanted to make sure they are replaced.

you can easily pull the valve cover, it doesnt take much time. take a look.

the valve seats are the ones to drop...rarely though.
