Intermittent ticking at idle

2009 Cooper s 113k miles timing chain replaced at 111k.
Ive had a cold start idle issue for a while now that goes away after the cars warming up. It will surge and stall sometimes.

Ive recently noticed a tapping or ticking sound at idle that comes and goes. It doesn't seem to be rpm dependent. What could this be? Vacuum pump?

Few things I can recommend:

1. Check your oil. These cars do not hold a lot of oil and with higher mileage you've likely got a warped valve cover which lets oil escape. If you aren't at the fill line, top it off and make sure you pay attention to oil burn in the coming weeks/months. Also, change it every 5k miles.
2. Does yours have an MT or AT? If manual, and you've not yet had your clutch replaced, then you may be hearing your throwout bearing and flywheel. The springs within the dual mass flywheel will being to fail and the throwout bearing will become compromised. Together, they make a lot of music.
3. Check your oil again. Seriously. And change it.

Thanks for your reply... I check and top off my oil regularly, I know these motors go through oil. I just changed my oil tonight and the fast tapping is still there. at idle it doesn't start right away and sometimes stops and restarts. Sounds like it's from the back side of the motor. I'm new to this problematic prince motor but not to motors in general. I know it's a guessing game just hopeing someone else has had this noise and fixed it.

the tapping noise is from the lifters. it usually happens with me after a rebuild. I personally dont pay attention to them, but you could try motor flush before your next oil change. it might clean them.

Did you do the timing chain? If so, I would be inclined to go back in and double check the timing, it should not be staling or wavering at idle. It is so easy to get it out by a couple of degrees especially with the cheapo Ebay locking tools.Light tapping noise is normal for my engine as MTB says.
Oh aye, and any codes coming up?
