Odd damage to head and pistons

had rattling sound posted on here but couldnt figure it out thought timing chain etc anyways got back from vacation pulled head and this is what I found, I did compression ck first it was 190 on 3 and then 0, all pitons and valve pocket have damage some more than others the shiny one is the worst. Just seems odd that if there was metal bouncing around that it would have hit anywhere else but edges ?? I originally thought rings had come apart.
car has 180 k on it and its a base model non S

Man, that's strange. If it's in all cylinders I can't imagine it's something physical like rings. I would think that would be more localized. How are the cylinder walls?

Probably not related to anything, but it looks like two of the plugs aren't all the way down, so either the wrong plug or not threaded all the way in. Not sure if you backed them out but it looks like there's carbon in the threads and I think the plug should be blocking those threads. Don't see how it could cause anything like what's going on though.

I guess you have a tough decision ahead of you, the value of a Justa with 180k vs. a set of new pistons, rings, bearings and maybe some head work. Sorry. I'll be curious if anyone can tell you what caused that.

oh yeah the plugs were just screwed by hand in to keep stuff out of the heads while i was working on it,, cylinder walls are fine so far havent got all pistons out yet.

It's very odd!
Could that be caused by detonation? Low grade fuel? Over-advanced ignition? Bad knock sensor?
The carbon build-up doesn't look that bad, though I don't think the car is driven very hard.

Good that you figured it out because man that looked really strange. Are you saying all of the valve seats came apart in all of the cylinders, or just the one?

This is a very common problem with these engines. I dropped a valve seat 500 miles after I fixed my warped cylinder head. I pulled the head again and had all new (and deeper) seats installed.

Check out this link.
